2022 Finished, another year closer to FIRE?

When the clock dinged last night, I looked back fondly on 2022 and all the joy it brought into our lives. Well sort of. It was a wonderful year for us as a family. My wife completed round two of bringing a child into the world, and so our son was born.

From an investing perspective, I think most people are glad it is over.

Our 2022 Milestones

Readers would know, we love to take out a few dollars every investing milestone we reach. 2022 however was the first year since we started this where we did not reach the next milestone.

There were a couple of reasons for this, but I would say the Covid economic downturn and recession catching up with our portfolio is a large contributor.

Like I said before, for us our new baby would definitely be the largest highlight.

Some other key events :

  • We moved home (Again… 6 times in 5 years.)
  • I changed jobs
  • I finished writing my novel. (Currently with the editor)

Portfolio Update & Time to FIRE

Like always, my aim is to be transparent with you my awesome readers. This year from an investing perspective, to be quite frank was a tough one.

With the S&P 500 being down almost 20% and our personal portfolio being down about 10%, I can confidently say this year was a tough one for investing.

This however in the grand scheme of things is a good thing for us. Long and short, we don’t need that money now, we need it in about 12 - 15 years (Conservative estimate.)

So buying stocks at a ‘discount’ now is a wonderful advantage.

Enough about us, more about you.

📚Cool Recommendations

This year I haven’t read as many books as years prior. One of my goals for 2023 is to read a lot of fiction to help me as a new author. So this list will be a combination of things I’ve seen that were super cool and handy over the year.

Where the Crawdads Sing - This was hands-down my favourite movie of 2022. It was extremely well written (It came from a novel) and interesting throughout.

Better Call Saul - I not only found my favourite show of 2022, but I found my favourite show of all time in Better Call Saul. Vince Gilligan is a master writer and I can’t wait to see what he produces next.

🔭The future

I am more than excited for the future, both personally and for those around me. I have friends that are actively pursuing FIRE and so seeing them build a better future is really exciting.

We plan to build on the strong foundation we’ve been laying for the past 4 - 5 years. I plan on releasing my book 31 March 2023 (Very excited for this)

We plan to keep investing in our kids. Watching them grow up is a treat.

Thanks again for being part of the blog and our lives.

We hope your 2023 is stellar!

Onward.
